World Cup Preview

So the prestigious World Cup 2014 in Brazil (or Brasil…) starts in 5 days now. So seen as we haven’t covered the World Cup recently I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to write about it.
In this blog, the focus will be on the top 8 teams in the world cup. Just a preview or a prediction if you like as to how far they will go in this summers competition. So, let’s begin.

Argentina:
30ab3a62598ecd850317c934aa7e7_h498_w598_m2-2185896
Along with Brazil, Argentina probably fits into the second tier of favorites, one notch below Spain and Germany. Playing on their home continent will help. And no other country can boast the attacking weapons Argentina does, even without the ostracized Carlos Tevez. Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Angel di Maria form a fearsome fivesome of forwards. With a solid corps of midfielders and defenders, a semifinal berth should fall within the Albiceleste’s capabilities.

Belgium:
???????????????????????????????????????????????????
No other country can boast anywhere near as much young talent as Belgium does, in spite of only being the size of Maryland (US state) and counting just 11 million citizens – Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen and Romelu Lukaku and Christian Benteke and Kevin De Bruyne are just a few of the great names coming out of Belgium. In spite of their age, they are already an outsider for the title, boasting more than enough talent in every line to match up with just about anybody the World Cup can throw at them. But they are also internationally inexperienced, meaning a quarter-final showing would be a fine result.

Brazil:
brazil-2014-world-cup-team
There is no ambiguity whatsoever about what is being demanded of the 11 lining up in the gold and green jerseys come June. The Brazilians expect Brazil to lift their sixth World Cup. Plain and simple. To make amends, in a sense, for 1950, when the only other World Cup on Brazilian soil was lost to Uruguay in the final – a national tragedy long in the memory.

The task at hand, however, is much less straightforward. The pressure will be crippling, even more so than in 1950. And, more alarmingly, the talent might not be there. Certainly, Brazil won the Confederations Cup. But this is no vintage Brazilian side. Neymar will surely dazzle up front. But the rest of the team is young overall, suspect in some spots in the back, somewhat uncohesive in midfield, and lacking a consistent goal-scoring threat in attack. A semifinals elimination to either Spain or Germany is the most likely outcome.

France:
article-2509561-196FEABB00000578-558_634x404
Deschamps must procure consistent performances from a brittle squad comprised of aging mainstays, temperamental stars and untested performers at the highest level. Ribéry offers potential salvation every time he steps onto the field, but he will be missing the World Cup due to injury. However his powers alone cannot eradicate the lingering concerns about the suspect mentality of a group reliant on erratic figures like Karim Benzema and Samir Nasri (also not going to the World Cup). Any outcome from a group stage exit to a quarterfinal berth remains firmly on the table depending on how this side molds together.

Germany:
91dove-uk-3123420
A team full of crafty technicians who play exciting and winning football and are entering their prime. In Mesut Ozil, Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze and oh so many others, Germany has the midfield depth to match anybody’s. And yes, that includes Spain. Consequently, anything less than a spot in the final will be a disappointment. Don’t be surprised if Germany lifts its fourth World Cup.

Italy:
Italy-Team-Squad-2014-FIFA-World-Cup-e1399288515939
After flaming out spectacularly in 2010, Italy decided it was finally time to rebuild and stop relying so heavily on the generation that won in 2006. With exciting young forwards Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy stepping into bigger roles and a strong supporting cast emerging, the return was immediate. Italy reached the final of Euro 2012, losing to Spain, and fell to the same team on penalties in the semifinals of the 2013 Confederations Cup. This team is on the ascent but not quite there yet. A quarterfinals exit is most probable.

Spain:
article-2348066-1A7934FE000005DC-734_634x399
Spain will enter the fray as one of the favorites. Its ability to join Brazil (1958 and 1962) and Italy (1934 and 1938) as consecutive winners hinges on whether it can find a way to outwit the athletic and robust approach of its fellow contenders. The trademark sharpness in possession must endure with lingering and potentially fatal questions in defense creating vulnerabilities when the opposition counters. Whether this group – perhaps just on the other side of its best with Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez not at their peaks – can muster that panache again or pursue the necessary alternatives remains uncertain. A place in the last four represents a reasonable expectation for a team still among the best in the world.

Uruguay:
Uruguay's football squad
It isn’t fair to expect another place in the final four with foundational pieces Diego Forlán and Diego Lugano on the wane. The strength of this side now rests disproportionately up front with Suárez and Edinson Cavani leading the side with their constant menace and steady supply of goals. Their incisiveness is ably supported through midfield, but the defense  might struggle against higher-quality opponents. A spot in the knockout stage represents a reasonable return for this outfit as currently comprised.

Key Players this Word Cup (Part 2)

Following my previous article of Key Players (Part 1), this article will follow on to Group B.

Here are the Key Players and Players to watch this summer in Group B.

This year, Spain, Netherlands, Chile and Australia are all in Group B this 2014 World Cup. Previous finalists in 2010 Spain and Netherlands are in the same group for this years competition.

Spain:

Spain’s Key Player this World Cup will be Barcelona’s Andres Ineista. Last World Cup in South Africa 2010 Ineista was Spain’s savior scoring the winning goal in the final. Ineista will be the key to Spain’s success this campaign due to his  direct style and quick feet. Ineista relies on exceptional creative passing, intuition and inventiveness to control the midfield. Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque described him as “the cmplete midfielder. He can attack and defend, he creates and scores”.

Spain’s Player to Watch will be Atletico’s talisman Deigo Costa. Currently he is injured and we will wait to see if he can make the team, however Deigo Costa chose to play for Spain rather than Brazil as his national team. Deigo Costa is a more direct striker and is different to previous Spain strikers in Fernando Torres and David Villa, Deigo Costa has been linked to Chelsea this summer and may want to prove his worth by scoring goals in a national competition and winning the World Cup. He will be Spain’s Player to watch.

Can Ineista be the difference yet again this World Cup?

Can Ineista be the difference yet again this World Cup?

Netherlands:

Netherlands Key Player this world cup will be Manchester United striker Robin van Persie. van Persie struggled last season with new manager David Moyes who was sacked briefly into his managerial career lasting only 11 months. Robin van Persie would like to forget last season and start fresh with a strong campaign with Holland and new boss Netherlands Coach and Manchester United Mananger Louis van Gaal. van Persie has scored 42 goals for Holland in 83 appearances. Robin van Persie will be vital for Holland as he will be the leading force scoring the goals.

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman will be Netherlands Player to Watch due to his successful start with club Roma finishing second in Seria A. Strootman is a box-to-box midfielder who can break up play very well and who can create chancess for the strikers. He will lead the strings in midfield for Netherlands this World Cup.

Chile:

Chile from South America is the team with very little recognition, however Key Player Arturo Vidal would like to show World Cup fans what Chile are about. Arturo Vidal is Chile’s captain and has won Seria A three times with current Italian champions Juventus. Vidal is a Key Player for Juventus scoring 28 goals in 95 appearances in his career. Vidal is a pivotal character in midfield, as he is a box-to-box midfielder, with great stamina and great shooting abilities who is able to score from long distances. In 2013 Vidal was voted 13th best footballer.

A Player to Watch in Chile’s team is Barcelona winger Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez moved to Barcelona in 2011, a move to be around £22mil. Alexis Sanchez has phenomenal pace, great crossing abilities and is a fine shooter. He will be keen to impress this World Cup with a few rumoured clubs to be after him. He will be a Player to Watch this summer.

Australia:

This Year Australia’s Key Player will be Tim Cahill who previously played for Everton in the Premier League. Tim Cahill has scored 32 goals in 68 appearances for Australia.

Australia’s player to watch is Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak. Jedinak has made over 40 appearances for his country who now captains them. He is a defensive midfielder and is known for his aerial ability, strong tacking and leadership on the pitch.

Last Time Out – England 2010

After missing out on Euro 2008, England, after 4 years, finally had a chance to show the world what they can do. They had players such as Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and captain Steven Gerrard in their prime and had a good chance to go far in South Africa. What happened in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa for England? Lets find out.

Manager:
Fabio Capello was into his second year of managing England and was an experienced manager; managing the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and Milan. England had high hopes for the Italian and hoped that he was the one to lead England to glory.

Squad:
There were shock omissions from England’s World Cup Squad; most notably Arsenal’s Theo Walcott. Other omissions included Darren Bent, Adam Johnson and Leighton Baines.
Here is the 23-man squad Capello took to South Africa: Joe Hart (Manchester City), David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Ledley King (Tottenham), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (LIverpool), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), James Milner (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Peter Crouch (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Group:
In early December 2009, England were announced to be in Group C. They were with the United States, Slovenia and Algeria. Seeing as the other nations were arguably inexperienced, England must’ve seen this group as quite comfortable to get out of; this was not the case.

Group Matchdays:
England’s first game of the campaign was against the United States in Rustenburg. Playing under the headlights, England sent out an experienced squad fielding the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Cole and Terry. They started the game off brightly with captain Steven Gerrard making a run into the box and calmly hit the ball past Tim Howard with the outside of his right foot making it 1-0 to England in the first 5 minutes. 5 minutes before half-time, Fulham forward Clint Dempsey shot from long-distance with a fair bit of power. It seemed as if goalkeeper Robert Green was to save it without no trouble, but he didn’t. He mishandled it and let it pass him to roll into the back of his net. Green was all over British Media; but not in the way he would’ve liked. The game ended 1-1, but the Green mistake overshadowed the game.

Cape Town was the venue for England’s next game which was against Algeria. Making 3 changes from the side which drew with the U.S, the most noticeable change was the man in net; David James replacing Robert Green. To cut a long story short, England lacked inspiration and looked far from their best as they were held to a 0-0 draw which was celebrated by the Algerians. 2 draws in their opening 2 games meant that England had to win their next game to secure qualification.

The last group game was a vital one; they had to beat Slovenia in order to progress to the knock-out stages. More changes were made in different parts of the team, Upson coming in for Carragher, Milner for Lennon and Defoe for Heskey. The important break-through for England was in the 23rd minute; James Milner delivering a cross good enough for Jermain Defoe to toe-poke it pass Handanovic. The two substitutes combining gave England the lead and from there it was just to have the determination to see the game out; and see the game out they did. England progressed through to the knock-out stages but not in a way many would’ve liked. Coming 2nd in the group meant that they faced the winner of Group D: Germany.

Knockout Stages:
England faced Germany in Bloemfontein, and seeing as how England scraped through the group stages, it looked to be a game in which England will struggle in straight from the off. Germany had the great attacking prowess including the likes of Podolski, Ozil, Muller and Klose. It was the latter of the group which took the lead as Klose took full advantage of Upson and Terry’s mistake after collecting Manuel Neuer’s goal kick to score in the 20th minute. 12 minutes later, Lukas Podolski scored after being allowed time and space to double the German’s lead. Straight after though, a goal came in from England from an unlikely source: Matthew Upson. He headed in Steven Gerrard’s cross to make give England some hope and some chance of qualifying. 2 minutes after was one of the most significant moments of the World Cup. Frank Lampard long-range strike fired past Neuer only to bounce off the crossbar and onto the goal line; the question was did it cross the line? Replays suggested it did, however the referee didn’t allow the goal as the two sides went into the break with the Germans leading 2-1. From then on, it was downhill for Capello’s side. Two quick fire goals from eventual Golden Boot winner Thomas Muller ensured their status in the World Cup, but for England, they returned with no dignity and humiliation.

England+v+USA+Group+C+2010+FIFA+World+Cup+jDO3JBjqRQAl

England’s best moment of the WC: Gerrard’s goal vs the US.

Aftermath:
Euro 2012 looked to be a stage where they could again announce themselves as one of football’s greatest. A good opening in the group stages meant they would top their group. However just like the World Cup they bowed out, losing to Italy on penalties. This was to be Fabio Capello’s last tournament as England boss as he disappointedly didn’t meet England’s standards.
The new England boss Roy Hodgson will be looking to do what his predecessor couldn’t and will be looking to make England a force to be reckoned with.

World Cup Guide for Smaller Teams : Nigeria

Marvin – @TrueBlueTalk_

45th in the FIFA world rankings does not begin to sum up this country rich in culture and proud heritage. With them being drawn into a group where Argentina are the only team of whom can turn them over shows signs of possible progression out of the group stages for the first time in 12 years. This as in World Cup 1998 they managed to make it out of a group consisting of heavyweights such as Spain spearheaded by a young Raul but were eventually brushed aside 4-1 by a Laudrup led Denmark.

Who are their threats?

The most known threat within England is obviously the young speedster by the name of Victor Moses disregarding his abismal tenure at Liverpool this season he has for both Chelsea and Wigan demonstrated the great attacking talents which could allow him to take games by the scruff of the neck to pull Nigeria through should they require such aid. Another dangerous forward that Nigeria have at their disposable is non other than Emenike; the FIFA 13 must have striker was joint top scorer at the recent African Cup of Nations with 4 goals of which Nigeria won by 1 goal to nill against surprise package Burkina Faso. His attacking talents fully recognised by his absolute blockbuster of free kick against Mali in the Semi-final. Now playing his trade at Fenerbache and with 12 goals in the just gone season provides further support to Moses and Nigeria’s general attack.

Defensive personnell?

Nigeria posses an array of defensive characters of whom are known on the European Stage. One of these and in recent times the most successful is their Goalkeeper he goes by the name of Vincent Enyeama. He is the first choice goalkeeper at Lille a team who finished behind the money powered machines of PSG and Monaco in third. He is aswell impressive between the sticks as he went on a run where he had 14 clean sheets in 16 games in France this season this highlighting that with confidence he can indeed be called upon when faced with the attacking powesses of the calibre of attackers such as Messi, Aguero and Dzeko in their group. Joseph Yobo is another name known by many due to his successful tenure at Everton. He formed a fearsome partnership with Distin in the later stages of his Everton stay and at Fenerbache currently has demonstrated this by keeping together one of the tightest defences in the league and aided Norwich in his loan spell there last season although they faced relegation at the end of the season.

Familiar Faces

The man most synonomous with Nigerian football is non other than Jay Jay Okocha; so good that they named him twice. He aided Nigeria’s furthest ever finish at a world Cup in 1994 and helped them towards their highest ever FIFA Ranking in that year also at 5th In the world the highest ever for an African Country never to be done again since. He lit up the French League playing for PSG  and famously being the role model at the time for Ronaldinho whilst at PSG he then moved to demonstrate his talents on arguably the biggest stage in the English Premier League. He however continously kept Bolton up with last minute equalisers and fantastic free-kicks.

This is a round up of one of the Smaller teams in the Competition and I shall be doing a segment on another small team in two days time. Hope you enjoyed reading.

World Cup Predictions! (Part 2)

Can Italy follow their success of the 2006 World Cup?

Can Italy follow their success of the 2006 World Cup?

Following my World Cup Predictions (Part 1) of the group stages I have predicted the winners from the knockout stage games and who will be the winner of the 2014 World Cup Brazil.

As I predicted that the winners of Group A will be Brazil and the runners up will be Croatia, Brazil will play the runners up of Group B who I predicted were to be Netherlands. This game will be tough for both teams as both have strong squads and have the possibility to win the World Cup, unfortunately the play early in Round of 16 were only one team can further progress. I think the winner of this game will be Brazil. The runners up of Group A who I predicted were Croatia will play the winners of Group A who i think will be Spain Spain have a lot to prove being the previous champions, I think Spain will beat Croatia and further progress.

Brazil and Spain to qualify.

I predicted in World Cup Predictions (Part 1) that the winners of Group C will be Colombia and Japan will be second. And that the winners of Group D will be Uruguay and the runners up will be Italy. The winners of Group C will play the runners up of Group D, so Colombia will play Italy. Another great game for the neutrals with both teams with promising football, however I think that Italy will win with their experience and qualify to the Quarter Finals.  this leaves Uruguay v Japan, Uruguay have very good strikers in Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani and i think they will prove to be the difference between their encounter with Japan.

Italy and Uruguay to qualify.

Previously I predicted that the winners of Group E will be France and the runners up will be Ecuador. And that the winners of Group F will be Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina will come second in that group. This leaves France to play Bosnia and Herzegovina and Argentina v Ecuador. I think France would have the edge on Bosnia and will qualify and that Argentina will beat Ecuador.

France and Argentina to qualify.

The winners of Group G I said will be Germany and the runners up will be Portugal and the winners of the final group will be Belgium and Russia will come second. So Germany will play Russia and that Belgium will play Portugal. I predict that German will beat Russia and that the game between Belgium and difficult will be a tough game but Belgium will win.

Germany and Belgium to qualify.

I predict that the Quarter Finals will be Brazil v Italy, France v Germany, Spain v Uruguay and Argentina v Belgium. I think that Brazil will beat Italy and that Germany will beat France. so Brazil and Germany qualify. When Spain play Uruguay I think that Spain will win and the game between Argentina and Belgium, I predict that Belgium will win. So Spain and Belgium qualify.

The Semi Finals that I predict will be Brazil v Germany and Spain v Belgium, both games will be very interesting as the winners get to play in the Final. I think that Germany will beat Brazil and that Spain will beat Belgium. Meaning that the Final will be between Germany and Spain.

The Final played on Sunday 13th of July will be tasteful as I predict that Germany will play Spain. I predict that the 2014 Fifa World Cup Champions will be Germany.

Thank you for reading my World Cup Predictions, and lets wait and see who will be crowned champions of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
